Jack retreats to a quiet island cabin after a difficult period, expecting solitude and finding Hannah already there. She is recovering from the end of a long relationship with a woman, and an evening of drinking brings their separate disappointments into unexpectedly close contact. The arrival of Hannah’s sister Iris transforms the situation again, exposing feelings and plans that none of them has explained honestly. Iris and Jack’s friendship, Hannah’s wish for a child and the sisters’ loyalty begin to pull against one another. Lynn Shelton’s intimate comedy lets awkward conversation do much of the work, following three people whose affection is real but whose assumptions about what others need may be less reliable than they think.
