Marie spends a summer watching the local synchronized swimming team, increasingly captivated by its confident star, Floriane. An agreement between the girls gives Marie access to a world she wants to understand, but proximity does not make Floriane easier to read. Meanwhile, Marie's friendship with Anne is strained by changing loyalties and their different hopes for intimacy. Celine Sciamma's debut follows the awkward negotiations through which the girls try to turn attention into affection. The swimming pool offers an image of controlled, coordinated beauty, while outside the performance their desires remain uneven, private and difficult to express.
