In the years surrounding the Second World War, Violette Leduc begins turning an unsettled life into writing. Poverty, difficult family ties and an intense hunger for affection shape both her work and her relationships. Meeting Simone de Beauvoir gives her an influential reader and a powerful source of encouragement, but Violette’s feelings exceed the professional bond Simone can offer. As publication brings recognition, the wish to be loved remains inseparable from the struggle to make herself heard. Martin Provost’s biographical drama follows a writer whose frank treatment of desire challenges the limits placed on women’s experience. Rather than presenting literary success as a simple escape, it traces the persistence required to keep working while longing, vulnerability and disappointment continue to press against the page.
