Nina and Madeleine live across the landing from each other, sharing an intimacy that Madeleine's family understands only as neighbourly friendship. The women have imagined a future in which they can live more openly, but their separate public lives still shape the choices available to them. When a crisis changes Madeleine's circumstances, that privacy becomes a barrier to the care and closeness Nina takes for granted. An ordinary apartment building turns into a space where every visit and closed door matters. This relationship drama follows two older women whose long love has been sustained partly through concealment. Its tension comes from the distance between the depth of their commitment and the limited recognition the people around them are prepared to give it.
