In postwar Helsinki, painter Tove Jansson tries to build an artistic life beyond the expectations of her family and the conventions surrounding her. Parties, friendships, and an unconventional relationship with a politician provide a sense of freedom, but meeting theatre director Vivica Bandler gives desire a new urgency. Tove’s love is intense, and the unevenness of the attachment challenges what independence really means to her. Meanwhile, the small creatures she has been drawing begin to attract attention beyond the private world in which they were created. As the Moomins develop a life of their own, Tove must decide what to value in her work and relationships. The biographical drama connects artistic discovery with the difficult pursuit of a love that can be returned.
