Thelma leaves her religious family home to study in Oslo, entering a university environment that offers freedoms she has scarcely experienced. Her attraction to fellow student Anja brings excitement as well as anxiety, especially when unexplained seizures begin disrupting her daily life. As the two grow closer, Thelma tries to understand whether the disturbances around her belong to a medical condition, her upbringing or something she cannot yet name. The film joins a young woman’s discovery of desire to an increasingly unsettling mystery about repression and power. Its supernatural elements develop alongside an intimate struggle over the boundaries her family has drawn and the possibility of building a life beyond them.
