On an isolated farm in the nineteenth-century American Northeast, Abigail moves through the routines of marriage while carrying a grief she cannot easily share with her withdrawn husband. The arrival of neighbouring couple Tallie and Finney brings a new presence into her days. Tallie’s curiosity and warmth create a connection that gradually becomes something neither woman can dismiss. Their time together offers relief from the demands and loneliness of their households, but dependence on the men around them limits the freedom they can claim. Through letters, visits, and remembered conversations, their intimacy acquires a private language. The romance follows two women discovering the depth of their attachment in circumstances that make a shared life difficult to imagine.
