In rural nineteenth-century Vietnam, fourteen-year-old May enters the household of a wealthy landowner as his third wife. The women already living there understand the customs and expectations she must learn, including the importance placed on producing a son. May begins observing the compromises that organise life inside the family, where comfort and status do not necessarily bring freedom. Her attraction to Xuan, the second wife, introduces feelings that the household has no safe place to acknowledge. Ash Mayfair’s debut places this desire within a wider portrait of women living under tightly controlled circumstances. Rather than presenting a conventional mutual romance, the film follows a young protagonist learning how much of her future has been decided by other people.
