The Queen of My Dreams

Azra has made a life in Toronto that includes acting studies and a girlfriend, far from her religious mother’s expectations. When her father dies, she travels to Pakistan and finds herself drawn back into family rituals, memories and the unresolved distance between herself and Mariam. The story moves between generations, placing Azra’s present beside the experiences that shaped her mother as a young woman. Their shared affection for Bollywood offers one language of connection when ordinary conversation is harder. Fawzia Mirza’s comedy-drama centres a queer Muslim daughter without reducing her life to a romance, exploring grief, cultural inheritance and the possibility of recognizing familiar desires beneath seemingly incompatible choices.
