Leila moves between an Iranian American family’s expectations and a life she has tried to define for herself. Her bisexuality, creative ambitions and strained relationship with her mother Shireen make belonging feel conditional, while the end of her marriage leaves new emotional complications. An unexpected pregnancy brings those tensions into sharper focus. As Leila begins to understand more about Shireen’s past, the story travels across countries and generations, revealing how much each woman has kept from the other. Maryam Keshavarz’s comedy-drama treats sexuality as an important part of its protagonist’s experience while placing her within a larger story of migration, secrecy, independence and the difficult work of seeing a parent as a person.
