A woman living with little money and few reliable prospects approaches the wealthy father she has never properly known. His seaside home promises a different kind of life, but the women already surrounding him have their own interests in the family’s future. Polite encounters become contests over belonging, trust and an inheritance large enough to make everyone watchful. Meanwhile, the protagonist’s relationship with an imprisoned girlfriend complicates the history she presents to her new acquaintances. Sébastien Marnier’s thriller builds its intrigue from class resentment, intimate dependency and shifting accounts of the past, keeping the question of who deserves belief as unsettled as the family’s apparent welcome.
