After surviving a catastrophe she cannot fully explain, Dani wakes in a secluded institution for young people with unusual powers. The other residents carry their own histories of fear and loss, and the treatment offered by their doctor comes with rules none of them completely understand. Dani finds particular comfort in Rahne, whose gentleness and troubled religious upbringing make trust both possible and difficult. Their growing affection gives her a reason to look beyond the hostility and suspicion surrounding them. As disturbing experiences begin to blur memory with immediate danger, the teenagers must question what the institution is really protecting them from. Their attempt to leave becomes a struggle to confront the forces that have taught them to fear themselves.
