In an isolated nineteenth-century household, Mary’s religious upbringing leaves little room for the life she wants. Her relationship with Eleanor, a servant in the family home, offers a private refuge from rules enforced through humiliation and punishment. When their attachment comes under scrutiny, the women discover how difficult it is to protect a secret in a house governed by watchful relatives. A death and an interrogation frame the story, turning the search for an explanation into something increasingly sinister. Edoardo Vitaletti’s period horror places forbidden love inside a domestic world where devotion and cruelty have become entangled, and where resistance may demand more than either woman can anticipate.
