Kristina inherits the Swedish throne in a world where religion, diplomacy and marriage define the boundaries of royal duty. Intellectually curious and resistant to convention, she pursues ideas that unsettle the advisers around her. Her attraction to Countess Ebba Sparre introduces another challenge to the future others have planned for her. Affection becomes entangled with the political calculations of a court that regards the queen’s personal life as a national concern. The historical drama follows Kristina as she attempts to reconcile desire, belief and the authority of her position. Its portrait of an unconventional ruler centres on the difficulty of claiming a private self while every decision is interpreted as an act of state.
