Queen Anne’s court is a place where access to the monarch can matter as much as an official title. Sarah has both, managing political business while attending to Anne’s needs with a familiarity few others can risk. When Abigail arrives looking for work and security, she quickly learns that a useful position may depend on winning a much more personal kind of favour. Their competing ambitions turn care, affection and desire into instruments of influence. Yorgos Lanthimos stages this period drama as an acerbic comedy of intimacy under pressure, with Olivia Colman, Rachel Weisz and Emma Stone at its centre. The country’s affairs remain in the background of rooms where three women are negotiating who is wanted, who is needed and who can afford to be replaced.
