Celie grows up in the American South facing violence, separation and a life in which other people decide what she is allowed to want. Over the years, connections with women around her begin to challenge that confinement. Singer Shug Avery brings warmth, desire and a different image of what a woman’s life might hold, while friendships and the hope of reunion sustain Celie’s determination. This musical adaptation follows her gradual movement toward a voice and a future of her own. Songs give form to thoughts and longings that cannot always be spoken openly, including the love that helps her imagine herself beyond the role imposed on her.
