Anka leaves her rural home to work as a servant in a prosperous household in Prague. There she meets Resi, a daughter of the family whose social position seems to give her freedoms Anka cannot imagine. Living under the same roof reveals a more complicated picture: both girls face expectations about the lives they should accept, and neither has much authority over the future being arranged for her. Their initial hostility becomes closeness and then a bond that crosses the household’s carefully maintained class divisions. Set around the First World War, this period drama follows two young women seeking a private life together in a world determined to assign them different places.
