Gabrielle is creating an illustrated book about sex, a project that encourages her to examine the experiences and assumptions behind the images she draws. Meeting Saul, an established novelist whose work has been familiar to her since childhood, offers the possibility of guidance and an absorbing conversation. Their differences are part of the attraction: he is a straight man, she is a lesbian, and both are curious about the ways other people understand desire. As their friendship deepens, Gabrielle’s relationship with her younger girlfriend Olivia comes under strain. The film follows the uncertain boundaries between artistic influence, personal curiosity and dependence, asking how someone finds her own voice while inviting another person into the process.
