Returning to her Scottish hometown in the 1950s, doctor Jean Markham takes over her late father’s practice and resumes caring for his bees. A friendship with a young patient brings his mother Lydia into Jean’s life at a moment when Lydia’s own future is becoming uncertain. The women begin offering each other practical help and companionship, and their growing closeness becomes something neither can dismiss as ordinary friendship. In a small community, however, private changes rarely remain private for long. Annabel Jankel’s period drama follows the relationship as it develops within the expectations of the town and the concerns of Lydia’s son, balancing the possibility of a shared home against the consequences of being seen together.
