Lydia Tár has reached a position of extraordinary authority in classical music. As a major recording project approaches, she manages rehearsals, public appearances and the professional ambitions of people who depend on her favour. At home, her relationship with Sharon, the orchestra’s concertmaster, is part of a carefully maintained life that also includes their daughter. New attention, old allegations and fractures in Lydia’s closest relationships begin to threaten the control she assumes is hers. Todd Field’s drama follows a lesbian protagonist whose artistic stature cannot be separated from the uses she makes of power, letting her commanding public presence grow increasingly difficult to reconcile with its private consequences.
