Seventeen-year-old AJ would rather withdraw into her own thoughts than take part in a family holiday at a British seaside park. Her mother wants togetherness, her relatives have their own distractions, and AJ sees little reason to believe the trip will offer anything she wants. Meeting Isla, a confident young lifeguard, changes the atmosphere immediately. Attraction makes the days feel charged with possibility, but it also brings out AJ’s awkwardness, jealousy and fear of being misunderstood. While trying to get closer to Isla, she clashes with the family whose attention she has been resisting. The holiday becomes an uneven first step toward recognising that independence involves understanding other people as well as insisting on being understood herself.
