Alice lives alone on the English coast, absorbed in research and determined to keep the surrounding community at a distance. During the Second World War, the arrival of a young evacuee named Frank interrupts the solitude she has carefully maintained. She initially treats his placement as a temporary inconvenience, but his questions and curiosity begin to reach feelings she has kept buried. Memories of her love for Vera reveal the loss behind her apparent indifference. As Alice and Frank grow closer, their separate histories acquire an unexpected importance to one another. The drama moves between remembered intimacy and the demands of present care, exploring how affection can return through a responsibility that first seemed impossible to welcome.
