Zaynab is a lawyer in Chicago who keeps much of her romantic life separate from the home she shares with her widowed mother. Meeting Alma, a confident Mexican American woman, makes that separation harder to maintain. The women bring different family experiences and expectations into their developing relationship, including contrasting ideas about how openly love can be acknowledged. At the same time, Zaynab begins training in wrestling, discovering an unexpected physical outlet for feelings she has difficulty expressing elsewhere. The romantic comedy places their connection within a world of mothers, work and cultural negotiation, following a woman trying to make space for desire without pretending that the relationships already defining her life can simply disappear.
