Emily Taylor is preparing for her husband’s return from prison, but the prospect of rebuilding their life offers little relief from the depression she is experiencing. Psychiatrist Jonathan Banks begins treating her, consulting her former doctor Victoria Siebert and trying a succession of medications. A new prescription appears to help, until troubling behaviour leads to an event with consequences far beyond the consulting room. As scrutiny falls on the treatment and those involved in it, professional authority becomes increasingly difficult to separate from personal interest. Steven Soderbergh’s psychological thriller moves from an intimate account of distress into a world of competing explanations, hidden motives and precarious reputations, asking how confidently anyone can read another person’s behaviour when so much depends on the story being believed.
