Rose arrives with her husband at the home of writer Shirley Jackson and academic Stanley Hyman, expecting a temporary arrangement as the younger couple establishes itself. Instead, she is drawn into a household where admiration and cruelty continually change places. Shirley is struggling with a new novel, and Rose becomes both an intimate companion and a source of imaginative fascination. Their charged relationship unsettles the roles each woman has been expected to accept, even as the men around them pursue their own ambitions. Research into a missing student gives their exchanges another layer of uncertainty. This deliberately fictional portrait of artistic creation follows a bond in which desire, identification, and the wish to escape domestic expectations become difficult to separate.
