Rei has loved Nanae since their school days, even though their adult lives have taken very different paths. When she learns about the brutal violence in Nanae’s marriage, she commits an act that makes returning to either woman’s former life impossible. The two flee together, but escape does not immediately produce the love Rei has imagined. Nanae’s fear, anger and dependence collide with Rei’s longing to be needed, and their journey exposes the unequal expectations beneath their bond. Moving through Japan with an uncertain future ahead, they alternate between closeness and conflict. The road offers moments of freedom while continually returning them to the question of what can grow between two people joined by desire, desperation and irreversible violence.
