A group of artists and friends in New York’s East Village tries to keep creating, loving and paying the bills as illness and insecurity reshape their lives. Among them, performer Maureen and lawyer Joanne negotiate a passionate relationship that can turn a disagreement into a full-scale performance. Their competing ideas about loyalty and commitment become part of a wider portrait of friendship under pressure. Adapted from Jonathan Larson’s stage musical, the film connects private arguments and public resistance through songs about the people who make a home possible. Maureen and Joanne’s romance is one substantial thread within its queer ensemble, rather than the only love story on screen.
