American poet Elizabeth Bishop travels to Brazil hoping that distance might help her find a different rhythm for her life and work. Visiting an old friend brings her into the orbit of architect Lota de Macedo Soares, whose confidence initially unsettles her. Friction gradually gives way to attraction, and their relationship offers Bishop a sense of belonging she has struggled to sustain elsewhere. The landscape around them becomes part of a shared life, even as artistic ambition, public commitments and personal vulnerabilities pull them in different directions. Bruno Barreto’s historical drama follows the intimacy between two formidable women, tracing the ways that love can nourish creativity while remaining exposed to jealousy, changing circumstances and the difficulty of caring for another person.
