Sixteen-year-old Cyd leaves home for a summer visit with her aunt Miranda, a novelist living in Chicago. The two women differ in temperament and in their ideas about pleasure, belief and the uses of a life, but sharing a house gives them opportunities to test those assumptions. Cyd’s encounter with Katie, a young person working in the neighborhood, opens a new romantic possibility and encourages her curiosity about desire. Miranda, meanwhile, has routines and relationships of her own that resist Cyd’s first impressions. The film moves between their conversations and separate experiences, treating a summer romance as part of a wider exchange between generations about intimacy, independence and the many forms a satisfying life can take.
