Decades after abandoning an attempt to swim from Cuba to Florida, Diana Nyad decides that the unfinished crossing still matters enough to try again. Now in her sixties, she begins a demanding campaign of training, planning and repeated attempts. Her closest ally is Bonnie Stoll, a friend whose work as coach requires patience as well as resolve. Around them, a crew must contend with currents, exhaustion and the risks of the open ocean. This narrative biopic follows a lesbian athlete’s pursuit of a defining ambition and the relationships that make the undertaking possible. Diana and Bonnie’s bond is presented through friendship and teamwork, giving the endurance story an emotional life beyond the swim itself.
