Angel LaMere leaves juvenile detention with very little to help her begin again. Returning to her former girlfriend does not provide the refuge she hoped for, and the life waiting outside offers few other places to land. Her younger sister Abby is still in foster care, while the death of their mother remains an unresolved force in both their lives. Angel has a purpose in mind, but travelling with Abby makes it harder to reduce the future to a single plan. Jordana Spiro’s debut follows the sisters through a landscape shaped by neglect, anger and the need for someone dependable. Angel’s queer life is part of her isolation and longing for connection; the relationship at the film’s heart is the bond between sisters.
