Jane loses her best friend Fiona unexpectedly and finds herself drawn toward the family Fiona has left behind. Helping Gemma care for her young son offers Jane a purpose when grief has made the rest of life difficult to navigate. The two women begin with different memories of the same person, but their growing closeness gradually becomes something neither can easily describe as friendship. Desire offers comfort while raising questions about loyalty, identity and the ways people try to keep the dead present. Their relationship also affects a child whose own needs cannot be set aside. As Jane and Gemma move toward each other, they must work out whether they are building a future together or asking their shared loss to hold them there.
