Mercy has learned to keep different parts of her life from meeting. Her family’s religious expectations belong to one world; her growing relationship with college student Jesse belongs to another. Being with Jesse offers warmth and a sense of possibility, but it also makes the separation harder to maintain. Mercy is dealing with alcohol dependence and uncertain work, and finding a more stable life means confronting more than the question of when to come out. As she begins to let other people see her more clearly, the prospect of her mother learning about the relationship becomes increasingly difficult to avoid. Emily Lape’s independent drama follows the fragile work of building an honest life when love, belief and family loyalty pull in different directions.
