Laila is a young woman in Delhi whose cerebral palsy does not diminish her curiosity, humour or desire for a life shaped by her own choices. An opportunity to study in New York places her in a new environment, where friendship and attraction challenge the limits others have assumed for her. Her relationship with Khanum, a blind activist, becomes central to a period of exploration that is exhilarating and difficult in equal measure. Independence also changes Laila’s relationship with her mother, who has been an important source of support. The drama allows disability, sexuality and family attachment to coexist without reducing its protagonist to a lesson. Finding her own voice requires learning how to be honest with the people she loves.
