Margarita keeps a Toronto household running with a quiet competence that its owners have come to take for granted. An undocumented Mexican nanny, she cares for their teenage daughter while trying to build a private life with her girlfriend Jane. When financial troubles lead her employers to dismiss her, the decision exposes how dependent everyone has become on her presence. Offers of help arrive, but not all of them recognize what Margarita actually wants, and Jane’s hesitation about commitment makes an already uncertain future harder to face. Dominique Cardona and Laurie Colbert’s drama follows a woman whose work has made her indispensable without making her secure, asking whether affection can become meaningful support when it is finally required to cost something.
