In the final weeks of the First World War, Luise lives alone on an isolated Alsatian farm. Hélène, a French woman fleeing violence, arrives seeking shelter, followed by Hermann, a German soldier entangled in the same danger. Their uneasy refuge brings the conflict outside into a tightly enclosed domestic world. Luise and Hélène’s developing intimacy offers a different possibility from the loyalties and roles imposed by war, while Hermann’s presence unsettles the balance between them. Language, desire and survival become difficult to separate as the three attempt to share a fragile sanctuary. Adapted from D. H. Lawrence’s The Fox, the film follows private longing at a moment when national boundaries are about to shift.
