Laurence and Fred have built an intense, unruly life together when Laurence tells her partner that she is a woman. The revelation does not end their love, but it changes the terms on which both have understood it. As Laurence begins to live openly, Fred struggles to reconcile loyalty, desire and her own need for a future she can recognize. Friends, family and colleagues respond with varying degrees of affection, discomfort and hostility, adding pressures the couple cannot keep outside their relationship. Spanning years of separation and return, Xavier Dolan’s romantic drama follows two women whose attachment repeatedly draws them together, even as the lives they need to lead seem to pull them towards different possibilities.
