The disappearance of a teenage girl unsettles a small Illinois town, exposing strains that were already present in its homes and school corridors. Joanna, Charlotte and Laurel respond to the uncertainty while trying to navigate their own friendships, desires and difficult relationships with adults. For Laurel, a developing connection with Colleen exists alongside public expectations about who she should be with. Music and heightened visual details allow the girls' inner lives to emerge in ways that ordinary conversation cannot always contain. This ensemble mystery is more concerned with the community's emotional life than with a straightforward investigation. Its substantial sapphic strand belongs to one of the central teenage girls, whose search for intimacy and self-determination forms part of the film's broader portrait of growing up.
