Savannah arrives in San Francisco and becomes drawn into the creative world of Laura Albert, whose celebrated literary persona has begun to attract attention its author cannot personally satisfy. A wig, sunglasses and a public appearance turn a temporary favour into a role that grows far beyond its original terms. As Savannah becomes the face of J.T. LeRoy, private feelings and public expectations begin to overlap, particularly when an admired actress enters the picture. Based on Savannah Knoop’s memoir, Justin Kelly’s drama approaches the literary scandal through the experience of inhabiting an identity other people believe in. It follows an increasingly complicated exchange of power, recognition and desire, asking what happens when a performance offers freedoms that everyday life has not yet made available.
