In occupied Poland, Janina’s life changes when her father gives shelter to Ester, the Jewish daughter of a friend. Ester must remain concealed, and Janina initially resents the demands her presence places on their household. When her father is arrested, responsibility for the hidden woman falls to Janina alone. Their isolation creates an intimacy that neither anticipated, transforming an arrangement of necessity into an emotionally charged relationship. Yet the same walls that offer protection also place power in one woman’s hands. As Ester begins to imagine a life beyond confinement, Janina becomes increasingly afraid of losing her. Jan Kidawa-Błoński’s wartime psychological drama follows the point at which devotion and possession become entangled, testing the fragile boundary between keeping someone safe and refusing to let her go.
