Hilma af Klint pursues a life in art at a time when the institutions around her expect women to accept a smaller place. Her training, spiritual interests and relationships with other women lead her toward paintings that depart radically from the visible world. Among the people sharing that search is Anna Cassel, whose intimacy with Hilma becomes part of a life in which artistic and personal independence are difficult to separate. Moving between the artist’s younger and older years, the film follows the confidence and isolation that accompany her developing vision. Recognition remains uncertain, and the people whose understanding she seeks do not always offer it. Hilma must decide how faithfully to follow work whose audience may belong to a future she cannot see.
