Frank’s record shop is approaching its last days, and his daughter Sam is preparing to leave Brooklyn for college. Their weekly music sessions have always offered a way to spend time together, but a song they record starts to suggest a different future to Frank. Sam has her own plans, including a relationship with Rose that makes the coming departure feel more immediate. Brett Haley’s warm drama follows a father and daughter whose shared talent does not mean they want the same things from it. Music provides a language for affection, frustration and the feelings that are difficult to say directly. The question is whether making something together can help them face a change that neither enthusiasm nor a good chorus can postpone forever.
