Abby joins her girlfriend Harper for Christmas with Harper’s family, imagining the visit might be the right moment to propose. On the way, she discovers that Harper has not told her parents they are a couple. Expected to pose as a straight friend, Abby enters a household where appearances matter and every family member seems to be managing a private disappointment. Harper’s efforts to keep the peace increasingly leave Abby alone, while meeting people from Harper’s past exposes the cost of maintaining the family’s preferred version of events. Over the course of the holiday, both women must decide what they can ask of each other. The comedy builds around the painful gap between loving someone privately and making space for that love in public.
