New Jersey detective Laurel Hester has spent years building a life with Stacie Andree when a terminal diagnosis forces them to confront an inequality in their legal protection. Laurel wants Stacie to receive her pension, but the county officials who control the decision refuse the benefit available to married heterosexual couples. What begins as an urgent practical request becomes a public campaign. Friends, colleagues and activists join their effort, while Laurel and Stacie try to preserve time together amid illness and official resistance. Based on their fight for equal treatment, the feature keeps the partnership at the heart of the political story. It explores how an administrative decision can threaten the security of a home and the recognition of a shared life.
