Traude has spent decades teaching piano in a women's prison when she encounters Jenny, a young inmate whose extraordinary ability is matched by anger and resistance. Preparing Jenny for a competition gives the teacher a purpose that demands far more than musical discipline. The work also disturbs Traude's carefully contained memories of a female lover and the choices she made under the Nazi regime. Chris Kraus's drama follows the volatile bond between teacher and pupil without presenting it as a romance. Music offers an uncertain route towards expression for both women, while neither can easily separate ambition from the damage of the past.
