Anya drives through the night in an old car, accompanied by an urn and memories she cannot keep at a manageable distance. Her lover Frida remains present in recollections that begin to mix with fantasy, giving the journey an uncertain emotional geography. A stop at an isolated bar introduces another stranger and another possible direction, although neither offers an easy route away from what she carries. Aurélia Mengin’s surreal road film uses heightened colour, enclosed spaces and dislocated encounters to explore a woman’s relationship with memory. The road promises movement, but movement is not the same as release. Frida’s place in Anya’s inner life gives the film its centre, even as the world around that connection becomes more difficult to read.
