Dede has lost the career and relationship that once gave her life shape, and her mother is determined that moving somewhere new will help. Next door, Laura wants more independence than her protective father feels able to give her. An unlikely friendship begins between the two adult daughters, while their parents discover a connection of their own. Dede’s camera offers a way to pay attention to other people even as she struggles with her own recovery. Combining a scripted family story with documentary-style material and animation, Alex Chu’s film follows people learning to accept help without surrendering their agency. Its central bond between Dede and Laura is a friendship, part of a broader portrait of loneliness, addiction, care and the families people gradually make together.
