Alexia and Eleanor live close enough to meet but far enough apart socially for their daily lives to look very different. One is constrained by material insecurity, the other by a family whose orderly surface leaves little room for difficult feelings. During a summer together, curiosity develops into friendship and then a first attraction neither can treat as an ordinary diversion. Their growing closeness provides an escape from home, while also making the pressures surrounding them harder to ignore. The drama places small moments of confidence beside the uncertainty of being young and dependent on adults. As the girls learn to trust one another, they begin to test the boundaries that class and family have drawn around their futures.
