Sidonie Laborde reads to Marie Antoinette at Versailles, a position that allows her brief access to a woman whose attention she longs to keep. News of unrest in Paris begins to unsettle the court, and the familiar rituals of palace life are overtaken by rumour, fear and calculations of escape. The queen’s attachment to Gabrielle de Polignac becomes increasingly important as danger approaches, placing Sidonie’s loyalty under a pressure she could not have anticipated. Drawn between devotion and self-preservation, the young reader sees how quickly proximity to power can become a source of vulnerability. Benoît Jacquot’s historical drama observes the collapse of a privileged world through a woman whose desire to matter to someone powerful may leave her dangerously exposed.
