Anora is living with an abusive husband when a cosmetics saleswoman named Imogene moves into the neighbourhood. Their friendship opens a possibility Anora has not allowed herself to imagine: a life shaped by affection rather than fear. After a confrontation at home ends in an accidental shooting, the women leave with Anora's children and a body that is increasingly difficult to account for. Nancy Kissam's dark comedy follows their improvised escape through family conflict, desire and the practical problems of starting over under disastrous circumstances. Anora and Imogene's romance becomes the emotional centre of a road trip whose passengers have very different ideas about where they are going.
